application to have a Heritage Trail in Columbia Heights . Please join us to
help choose the icon and trail title that will identify Columbia Heights to
the rest of DC and its visitors.
Please join us as we work to tell our neighborhood¹ s story.
We need your input, your voice, your story.

Please feel free to copy and distribute the attached flyer at your local
churches or other community organizations, and be sure to spread the word to
your neighbors!

The Washington , DC Neighborhood Heritage Trails Program is a project of
Cultural Tourism DC (CTdc) in collaboration with the District Department of
Transportation. CTdc initiated the program with two goals in mind: helping
visitors find their way around Washington¹s historic neighborhoods and
promoting community pride. Each Trail begins with the collection of stories
and photographs from neighborhood residents and organizations. Professional
historians work with the neighborhood to develop the narrative on each
subject and to create the finished Heritage Trail. The District Department
of Transportation, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic
Development, and the US Department of Transportation, funds the Washington ,
DC Neighborhood Heritage Trails Program. Additional support comes from
community associations and business groups. For more info rmation on the
Program, please go to www.culturaltourism dc.org

     I wanted to let everyone know that a robbery occurred yesterday at
nana. At 2pm, a male entered the shop and proceeded to pile clothes on
the counter that were "birthday gifts for his wife and aunt." our
manager helped him with collecting some of the pieces when he pulled
a knife & demanded the clothing be put in shopping bags. He then
grabbed more merchandise on his way out of the shop. he was a black
male, dark complected, with a slight mustache, approx. 40 years of
age, approx. 5'9" wearing a striped polo shirt, NY Yankees baseball
cap, jeans, and a silver backpack. our manager was not physically
hurt but very shaken up. the police responded quickly when called. i
don't really care about the merchandise, i'm just grateful our
manager was not hurt.

this incident has made me re-evaluate what safety measures we have &
will need to make the shop a safer place to work. i thought i'd pass
the information along so you might be able to also at your own
business before an incident. if anyone has suggestions, i'd love to
hear them.

please be safe everyone.

Beginning early next week, there will be roadwork on the northbound
side of 14th Street , between Florida Avenue and Belmont Street . We
will be installing a new water main in front of the View 14 site. The
existing water main is located in the sidewalk very close to our site,
and DCWASA has requested that we install a new line in the street.

The roadwork will last approximately 4-6 weeks. Work will occur
during daytime hours. Most of the work will be in the curb lane, but
there will be periods when the work extends further out into the
street and traffic patterns will be adjusted accordingly.

When work involves the interruption of pedestrian foot traffic, the
work will occur at night.

About Mocha Hut

With two locations in the District, the Mocha Hut is a neighborhood hangout where you'll find freshly brewed coffee, a light menu and a real sense of community. Events are held regularly at the U Street location, including poetry readings and live music. Warm, earthy colors anchor the walls and local art is often on display. There's also Wi-Fi access for those who like to work or study in proximity to unlimited caffeine.

In addition to a standard selection of coffee and espresso drinks, Mocha Hut offers assorted baked goods and a menu of sandwiches with names that pay homage to the city. The Ellington, a nod to both the Duke and the building where the U Street Mocha Hut resides, combines roast beef, swiss cheese, red onion and horseradish on sourdough. Mocha Hut also serves breakfast all day, including fluffy pecan waffles, croissant and bagel sandwiches, frittatas and a variety of egg plates. -- Amanda McClements (AOL City Guide)

The Green Team is a community collaboration that enhances the quality of the experience of living, working and visiting Washington DC, that connects its residents to opportunity. The MidCity Business Association championed a $350,000 appropriation from the DC Government that will ensure that there are Safety, Ambassador and Maintenance services in MidCity five days a week. Additional funding and in-kind support is being sought, in order to expand and sustain the program, from numerous sources including local and national retailers; foundations; government programs; developers; educational institutions and training programs; private donors, property owners and businesses. These are all alternative funding sources for providing and expanding upon the types of services normally provided by Business Improvement Districts.

There are five goals that are at the foundation of the Green Team program:
-  Create a safe, beautiful and hospitable business district in the heart of historic DC;
-  Improve economic status of Green Team members and help stabilize family system;
-  Enhance range of educational / career opportunities by connecting to opportunities;
-  Sustain and stimulate economic investment in historic business corridors;
- Develop funding to sustain and grow the program to meet expanding community needs

The primary source of funding is through the Neighborhood Investment Funds (NIF) through the Office of the Deputy Mayor of Planning and Economic Development, with the support of Councilmember’s Jack Evans and Jim Graham. The program is being operated by the Columbia Heights Shaw Family Support Collaborative with the MidCity Business Association and the Shaw Main Streets providing oversight in their respective service areas.

Greetings Friends;

Due to the Labor Day Holiday which falls, coincidentally, on the same day as our MidCity Monday Mixer; and because many of our businesses will be closed and most of us out of town, we regret to inform you that September’s Mixer is cancelled. We absolutely hate to do this since for the past 16 months we’ve partied rain, shine, or holiday. We make the exception here and hope it will never happen again.

However plan to be at the October 2nd Mixer hosted by the incredible Mocha Hut on U street! And keep on your calendar:

November 6th at City Paws on 14th with food provided by Rice.
December 4th at Simply Home on U street.

Be looking early 2007 to be at Results the Gym, Future Green and DragonFly.

As always, thanks for being a part of the most exciting neighborhood in the city.
Support Local Business!

Much success,
